Preserve Our Past - Round III |
|
|
The Preserve our Past, or POP committee was started in 1992 to raise matching funds for a Texas Department of Transportation grant to replace the Milam County courthouse clock tower and statue of justice atop it. Stones were sold for from $100 to $750 and inscribed with names or messages chosen by the donors. The plan was to lay the stones in a path on the courthouse grounds, so it was called "A Walk Through History." The drive raised $127,000 and the remodeling was
completed. Just as the stones were about to be laid, word was received
that Milam County was receiving another grant to completely restore the
courthouse to the design and materials as it had been built,
consistent with modern fire and building requirements. The "Walk
Through History" was completed shortly after the reconstruction of the courthouse. |
