“Mosey Around Milam County

     The Milam County Historical Symposium is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Milam County Historical Commission, Rockdale Historical Society, Citizens National Bank, First National Bank and the Rockdale Federal Credit Union  partnered to sponsor this symposium.

     The program will begin with Amber C’ne Robertson singing “Texas Our Texas”.  District Judge Ed Magre will welcome the group followed by Dr. Lucile Estell, moderating the program and recognizing the Horned Toad Essay Winners of 2003.  Kay Harvey Mosley of THC will recognize the PRESERVE AMERICA county partners.

      Speakers include Dan Potter of THC addressing Milam County Archeology in the Missions and Old Nashville area.

Dan Prikryl of LCRA will speak on prehistoric Indians.

      There is a lunch break 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.  During this time, there will be a book sale and signing at the Lucy Hill Library.

      Carmen Goldthwaite, noted author, will speak on research she has done on Texas Women – “Standing Tall in Her Footsteps”.   Final speaker is Bruce Jordan who will speak on documenting history.

Certified Local Government (CLG) Milam County submitted their CLG Report on August 15, 2004.  Copies of this report are on file in the County Historical Records.

This report covers all the surveys, documents, markers, and work completed by members of the Milam County CLG Committee from August 2003 to August 2004.   If you are interested in getting a copy, call 512-446-3404 to request a copy.

 MARKERS At the present time, Milam County has 70 Markers, You can access information on the Internet website www.milamcounty.org or

 www.TexasHistoricalCommission.com. 

        To date the Milam County Historical Commission Marker Committee has a list of 44 markers listed to research. These markers include Historic Cemeteries, Site/Subject Markers, or Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks.

       The History Division of THC has published changes in the requirements for application:

MCHC MEETING   The Commission will meet 10-11-04  in Minerva, Texas at the Community Center at 10:00 a.m.  These meetings are open to the public.  Agenda’s will be posted and sent to members on or before October 5, 2004.  The October Meeting Agenda includes the election of officers for the years 2005 and 2006.

Texas Historical Commission Lakes/Brazos Region Conference Oct. 21-22, 2004 in Hillsboro, TX.

Texas Brazos Trail Brochure Launch was held in College Station, TX at the George Bush Museum Library on September 24, 2004.  Milam County was represented by: Dolores Mode, Mr. & Mrs. Randy Brinkley, Rosalind Brinkley and Tamara of Cameron County Inns, Rockdale Mayor John & Mrs. Shoemake, Judith Slusher and Joy Graham.
