Lesson Plan Companion - Grade Book
Are you a school teacher and still slogging through the creation and
updating of manual grade books to match your lesson plans, not to mention the
production of periodic progress reports?
Here is one that can't miss. Grade Book is an MS Excel 2000
spreadsheet that automates recording and reporting of grades for teachers. It is
designed to fit snuggly with your lesson plans and give you an up-to-date
picture of your lesson plan progress. Since the Principle Consultant with our
company has a sister that teaches 1st grade and a brother-in-law that teaches
junior-high history, it has been developed to meet the needs of real world
teachers. This is the kind of tool all teachers would use if they were treated
as the professionals that they are. Let us help.
Features:
- It is FREE!
- Class Manager sets up separate sheet for each
subject (Math, Science, Language Arts...) or period (Am His 1st, Tx His 2nd,
Am His 3rd...). Classes can be graded numerically (100, 85, 65),
alphabetically (A, B, C, D, F or E, S, N, U) or as Yes / No entries (for
things like attendance). The Class Manager makes this easy and efficient.
- Student Manager makes it easy for primary /
elementary teachers to add students to all or selected Class sheets at one
time. It also helps secondary / high-school teachers that have lecture and
lab components to their grades. This makes grade book setup a snap.
- Student Manager lets you add, rename, drop, delete,
copy and transfer students to / from any group of sheets. This makes student
maintenance a breeze.
- Student Detail sheets can be created for monitoring
and documentation of a Special Needs Student's skill development.
Skills are managed in Student Detail sheets by Skill Manager
similarly to students in a normal Class sheet. This feature lets you focus
on teaching rather than paper work.
- Assignment Manager lets you enter assignments one at
a time or in batch. For 'attendance' or similar sheets that have daily
grades, you can enter an assignment as '8/9' with Repetitions of '30' and 30
assignments are entered for each successive week day. Yes it skips the
week-end days. You can delete an assignment if you make a mistake.
- Assignment Manager accepts assignment weights as
either a multiple or a percent. For example, 'weekly quiz' with the default
weight of one (1); 'mid-term' with a weight of '5' has the weight of five
(5) weekly quizzes; and, 'final' with weight of '40%' counts as forty
percent (40%) of the total grade.
- Assignment grades can be picked up from another
sheet's current six-week score. This is for things like Language Arts that
has three assignments specified by successively clicking the sheets
'Spelling', 'Writing' and 'Reading' in the 'Reference to sheet' box and
giving a weight of three (3) for 'Reading'. This makes Language Arts a
summary grade, made up from the grade from the Spelling sheet (with a weight
of 1), and the Writing sheet (with a weight of 1) and the Reading sheet
(with a weight of 3).
- Assignment Manager enables worksheet protection.
This keeps your records safe from those who might like to change grades but,
more likely, from someone inadvertently changing the grades or control data.
- Status Manager produces status reports that can
contain six-weeks, semester and / or year grades. You can select the
subject(s) / period(s) to be included in the report. They can even contain
the current six-weeks detail grades in reports for a single subject or
period. All of this is under your control. The reports can be viewed and /
or printed one at a time or they can be printed in batch. Many fewer hours
of un-paid homework!
- It is FREE for now and will remain so for users
participating in the Beta testing!
To use GradeBook, download the self-extracting zip (.exe) file
from the link at the end of this page. If you want to pass it along to others,
which you may do, click 'Save this program...' and then enter the location where
it is to be saved. To run the program once it is saved, click "Open
folder...' and double click the file 'gradebook.exe'. If you just want to run it
on the computer on which you are downloading, select 'Run this program...'. When
the program runs, two files are extracted and put into the folder 'c:\gradebook'.
grade.xla - This is the application part of the
program. It should reside in the folder 'c:\gradebook' at all times unless you
want to find it each time you create a new book.
gradebook.xlt - This is the MS Excel 2000 template that
you click to start a new book. You can put this file any place you like but we
recommend that you leave it in the c:\gradebook folder.
This program is provided as a public service and as a
demonstration of Channel Consultants' office automation services. Although it
has been heavily tested, it is an ongoing development and updates to the
application will be provided from time-to-time. If application updates become
available, this should not invalidate any work that you have done before; i.e.,
your working book will still function. If you experience a problem, let us
know.
At this time, we do not make any claim that the program is bug
free. The program has been developed using MS Excel 2000 and it is not known if
it will work on earlier versions (It should work on later versions). You must
check the results. You are solely responsible for the programs accuracy or
fitness for your particular purpose! Channel Consultants disclaims all
responsibility for its accuracy or fitness for any particular purpose. Sorry, my
lawyer made me say that.
Always back up your working grade book
and grade.xla file before upgrading to newer version!
